Here is another sketch from my archive of Cambodia #UbrbanSketches. I drank a fair bit of Sra Beer Angkor – a locally made beer – when I lived there. Although I learnt to speak Khmer fairly well, I couldn’t read or write very well – though I did learn how to write Sra Beer Angkor – that’s what is written on the red sign in this sketch.

Here is another sketch from my Cambodia archive. This one was done in pencil and pastel – my favourite media at the time. Obvously I did a lot of sketching in temples when I lived there – I always found them to be lovely peaceful and quiet places.
Nov-1993
I didn’t have time to sketch today, so here is one from my archives. In 1992 I went to the WOMAD (World of Music, Art and Dance) festival in Morecambe. As with all music festivals the campsites get pretty muddy and my car got stuck in the mud – this sketch makes the campsite look more idyllic than it was. Luckily some guys helped push me out. If I recall rightly my tent also collapsed one night.

Here is another sketch from my archives. When I lived in Phnom Penh, I used to go out on Sundays on my bike and sketch some of the interesting houses in the area where I lived. This was before the city became much more developed and crowded…when there were still old wooden houses in the centre of the city. I am not sure if that is the case anymore.

I haven’t had time to sketch again today – just too much work – so I am posting from my archives. Despite the crudeness of this sketch done in Cambodia, it brings back happy memories for me. This building is part of the Faculty of Architecture in Phnom Penh where I taught for three years. I drew this while I was waiting to meet some of my students (or perhaps work colleagues) as we were going out together on a trip. I got the colour of the building just right I think – and they are still that deep rusty red today.

I read a post the other day that said if you can’t think of anything to sketch, then sketch your sketching kit (that’s a lot of use of the word sketch). As I have sketched (there I go again) all of my kit multiple times, I decided to draw this old box of pastels. I made up this little box many years ago (in the dim and distant years when they sold strepsils in tins instead of plastic bags) and toted it around with me everywhere I went (before I did the same with watercolours).

Here is another sketch from my archives. This one was done during a trip Laos. I was lucky enough to travel there only a little while after the bridge to Thailand had been opened, so there were very few tourists. I timed it to be there for the New Year (the New Year is celebrated in April in Laos and Cambodia) and had a fantastic time. I think this sketch was done in Vientiane.

Here is another sketch from the archives done during a trip to Vietnam I made with a friend in 1993. We started in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh) and then took a bus to Dalat, where I remember it being relatively cold and drinking lots of really nice coffee. I guess I drew this from the hotel where we stayed.
