Here is another #UrbanSketch from my archive done in 1994 when I lived in Cambodia. I don’t recall the occasion when I drew this – but it was probably somewhere near the old post office building.

I have other sketches to post but our scanner is in the repair shop, so I am posting something from my archives. This one goes back to January 1994 when (if I remember correctly) I went up to Siem Reap on the ferry, for the new year. I remember seeing the new year in on the edge of the Tonie Sap lake while we waited for dawn, so we could cross over the lake. I’ve never seen so many stars.

I haven’t had time to sketch again today – just too much work – so I am posting from my archives. Despite the crudeness of this sketch done in Cambodia, it brings back happy memories for me. This building is part of the Faculty of Architecture in Phnom Penh where I taught for three years. I drew this while I was waiting to meet some of my students (or perhaps work colleagues) as we were going out together on a trip. I got the colour of the building just right I think – and they are still that deep rusty red today.

I didn’t have time to sketch today, so here is another one from my archives. Many of my older sketches are done in pencil and/or pastel. I think this one was done on a trip to the countryside with the students I was teaching. I love to sketch in ink these days, but a good pencil can be really effective.

Here is another sketch from my archives. This one was done during a trip Laos. I was lucky enough to travel there only a little while after the bridge to Thailand had been opened, so there were very few tourists. I timed it to be there for the New Year (the New Year is celebrated in April in Laos and Cambodia) and had a fantastic time. I think this sketch was done in Vientiane.

Here is another painting from my days in Cambodia. I was lucky enough to be able to visit the Angkor temple complex several times, and have the time to sketch and enjoy the atmosphere, in a time when there were not many visitors. This one is of the Bayon temple, famous for the 216 gigantic serene looking faces.

Here is one from the archives – this is one of a series of 12 towers, along the eastern side of a royal square in Angkor Thom – part of the Angkor Wat complex of temples near Siem Reap in Cambodia. I drew this in ink with a dip pen and then used chalk pastel for the colour.

Another from my old sketchbooks – a quick ink and ink-wash drawing of the library at Preah Khan – one of the temples in Angkor/Siem Reap (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preah_Khan)

Back to sharing some from my Cambodia sketch books – here is one of Ta Prohm – one of the temples in Angkor/Siem Reap (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ta_Prohm). This was done in pencil and watercolour pencil.
