02-174 – Domes in campsite

I didn’t have time to sketch today, so here is one from my archives. In 1992 I went to the WOMAD (World of Music, Art and Dance) festival in Morecambe. As with all music festivals the campsites get pretty muddy and my car got stuck in the mud – this sketch makes the campsite look more idyllic than it was. Luckily some guys helped push me out. If I recall rightly my tent also collapsed one night.

Sketchbook UK.01 – Part 1

It has taken me ages but I’ve been scanning my old sketchbooks, starting with the first one I used regularly. Rather than post each sketch laboriously, I have made a little video and a collage. These sketches were done in the UK and are mostly black and white, done in ink or charcoal, though there are some also coloured with pastel.

02-115 – Writing letters with socks on

Here is another one from my archives. This sketch of two of my friends was done when we were in Pembrokeshire on a little holiday, staying in a Youth Hostel. I’ve always struggled sketching faces – Karen (on the right turned out okay), but my attempt at sketching Emma’s face, on the left, was a bit of a disaster.

112 – Newsagent and van at traffic lights

Here is another early sketch from when I lived in Bath. I still remember doing this (despite it being done 30 years ago). I sat on a bench on my way home from work and it was really cold – even though I was wearing fingerless gloves. I used to live up the hill to the right and had to cross the river (that’s a river in the foreground) and go under the railway viaduct. I still think of this as my first “urban sketch”…though I am sure I did others before this.
