This sketch was done after a little walk down Basdaku Beach (also called White Beach), past the public area and a foreigner picking up trash…sufficing as a little exercise after stuffing a big fluffy fruit-filled and syrup-drizzled pancake for breakfast.
Here is the last sketch I did with Urban Sketchers Manila at our year end sketch-walk. I drew this using one straw-load of Chinese ink from National Book Store and using a quill pen made from a straw (thanks to a little workshop run by M Roxas), and which worked amazingly well.
This is the second sketch I did with Urban Sketchers Manila at our year end sketch on Rizal Day, in Fort Santiago. I sketched the bags of the sketchers inside the museum compound while I chatted with my friends about new paper, ink and brushes….which was probably really boring for my daughter who kindly came along!
Here is my first sketch done with Urban Sketchers Manila on Rizal Day at the Museo ni Jose Rizal at Fort Santiago. I am always surprised that so few people show up at events like this given the millions that live in Manila. The ceremony was mostly attended by troupes of scouts and a smattering of tourists.
Here are some sketches of a TV show and a movie that I have enjoyed recently. (See Sketch No.111-3302 for others). The first is “Late Shift”, a Swiss film I think. Very intense and not a minute wasted. If you think nurses don’t deserve higher pay or wonder why there is a shortage in Europe then watch this. The second is “Somebody Somewhere”. Surprisingly good and nice to see real Americans and lots of oddball characters. Both are shows where nothing much happens but are somehow great. I usually prefer to sketch from life…but I find sketching stills from the TV is a good way to practice faces.
This is a sketch of my wife’s iPad stand (a Christmas present), done while Grey’s Anatomy played in the background. I sketched this with a random pen that was laying around (a Lovein 0.3mm biro) and needed to work on it a bit until I was satisfied.
Here is the second sketch I did on our family Christmas gathering – on Boxing Day. Although I didn’t sing Karaoke I was up till the early hours on Christmas Day and had a late start and late breakfast before I sketched this. I was satisfied with the way the pool turned out but not the rest of it. I also broke one of my personal sketching rules “find a comfortable place to sketch from” – I sat in a swinging chair…not a good idea when you are trying to draw!
As we usually do these days, the Domingo (plus Price) clan gathered for a Christmas get-together – this time at a place called Hillix Resort in Los Baños. We paid for this as our Christmas gift to everyone – plus we handed out the kimchi I had made (see Sketch No.112-3314). Although the resort was a bit short on facilities, it had a nice pool (see next sketch), Karaoke and a great view. In the distance you can see Laguna lake (yes it is brown) and Talim Island. I used my new Noodlers”Kung Te-Cheng” blue ink for this…lovely!
We had our big Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve as we have our big family gathering (out of town) on the 25th. We spent most of the day cooking, then ate it all (or at least overly large portions) in less than an hour. This is our coffee table sketched as we watched “It’s a Wonderful Life” for the nth time and dozed off.
