Here is an old sketch that has been hanging around in my sketchbook since earlier this month. This was the second sketch I did on the way to Türkiye from Manila – during my stopover in Doha. The area by the gate that left from had a series of trees – either real or really good fakes, I didn’t have time to take a closer look.

On my way back from Türkiye I had a very long layover (9 hours) in Doha. I started with this sketch (a huge wooden sculpture)…then slept in one of their ‘quiet rooms’. According to the blurb on a little sign this sculpture draws inspiration from pop culture and animations and is an exploration of humanity) Apparently it used to be installed at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park UK, Frieze Sculpture Park and Regent’s Park London, before it ended up here.

Here is another sketch I did on my way to Türkiye. There are several of these huge metal artworks in the airport at Doha…I might have even sketched this one before. The lower sphere has a slide connected to it and is part of a children’s play area.

After two and a half years of not being able to travel, we finally managed to get a trip to the UK sorted out. We had a nightmarish departure from Manila with my wife almost missing the flight because of a spurious immigration issue, but eventually made it to Doha, where I sketched this while waiting for our connecting flight.

On our way to the UK we had a 4 hour lay over in Doha. We decided to make use of the family quiet room and have a lounge and a snooze!

Here is another sketch I did when I had a very long layover in Doha on my way home from Lebanon. This bronze sculpture is by Tom Otterness and is part of a series called “playground” – you can climb inside this one. By the time I drew this it was 4am and I was falling asleep!

If anyone has travelled through Doha they will be familiar with this huge teddy bear sculpture. It’s called Untitled Lamp Bear and is by Swiss artist Urs Fischer. Apparently it’s supposed to celebrate the idea of travel…but with a lamp shoved up it’s back, it looks more tortured to me. I had to perch on a bar to draw this – no chairs in this area! I was also hoping this would count as a panda for the Doodlewash prompt of Wed-30-May.

We left the UK on 2 Jan heading back home. I didn’t have time to sketch in Heathrow but we had a few hours in Doha so I drew this. The colours turned out a bit muddy, but that was the colour scheme in the airport anyway!
