84-2634 – Two birds one head-torch

In preparation for a short hike on Saturday 23 March, I had to hunt around the house to find this head-torch (because the hike included a possible visit to a cave). I (surprisingly) found it where I expected it to be…and decided I would sketch it too, solving the problem of finding it and my daily question of “what shall I sketch”, at the same time. I think this head-torch was a Christmas present…so this sketch is also a thank you present!

84-2633 – Two elephants

So after all my busy urban sketching it’s back to some still life-type sketches at home again. I’ve probably sketched these two objects before, but I thought they would go well together. The wooden elephant came from when we lived in Cambodia I think and the elephant mug was a present from our daughter when she made a school trip to South Africa.

84-2632 – Art in the Park

I had a really busy weekend on the 16th and 17th March, because the day after the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC event, I joined #ArtInThePark2024. I submitted 7 paintings (with two together as a pair), using simple IKEA frames, but this time round sold just one (last year I sold 2). I learned a few lessons from this experience. I did this sketch outside the Shaka Cafe on Leviste St. in Makati, while we were having breakfast and waiting for the official opening of the art fair. Something is off about the perspective in this though!

84-2630-1 – Many Views, One Story

These are the sketches I did at Workshop 2B “Many Views, One Story: Community Sketching Experience” with Maria Regina Tuazon, during the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC event. The workshop used a set of cards developed by Marc Taro Holmes in 2016, to encourage the group to sketch different views of the same place, arriving at a collective story (the venue was the Quezon Memorial Shrine).

We were also encouraged to write a line or two on the sketch, to tell the story of the setting, highlight particular features or overhead conversations. I picked cards suggesting I sketch the high point (first sketch in this post) and a garden feature like a fountain.

84-2627-9 – Drawing on the move

These are the sketches I did at workshop 1A: Drawing on the Move with Genine Carvalheira during the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC event, with the Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global). The workshop was about “learning to draw with speed and confidence” – so Genine had us sketch the the back of the Quezon Heritage House in QC Memorial Circle.

After some guidance (and a demo from her) she had us do it again…this time in three minutes. The middle sketch was done when we did a little walkabout near the park. I learnt to be a bit more fluid in the way I draw….if I want to draw super-fast!

84-2624-5 – 45 second faces

During the “Drink and Draw” evening with #UskQuezonCity and the Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global), one of the board members, Eric, encouraged us to try drawing faces really quickly starting at a minute or so and going down to 20 seconds. The first of these sketches shows Eric and Don.

In the second one I wrote peoples names as the faces became unrecognisable! I added the watercolour later to try and make them look a little more human!

84-2623 – Mohan Ysa Shilpi Ce

Here is another sketch done during the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC event, with the Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global) at Urban Chick in QC. I think we had been discussing drawing faces and people, so I gave it a go – there are lots more faces coming in my next post too…

84-2622 – Urban Chick

Here is my first sketch (of many) done during the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC (translated as “Meeting Place in Quezon City”) event. The Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global) were visiting for a series of events and activities. For me this kicked off with a “Drink and Draw” social evening at a little restaurant called Urban Chick along Maginhawa Street in QC. I arrived pretty early (I wasn’t sure how bad the traffic would be), so I started this sketch before the place filled up.
