117-3433 – Smiling later on in the conversation

Here is another sketch of my mum done during our regular video call. She started off a bit “droopy” but was much more animated by the time the call ended. I started this with watercolour pencils…which feel less permanent and looser (which is good as I am a bit tentative when sketching faces) – and then added some touches of some new blue Sailor ink afterwards.

  1. This is a really lovely, lively sketch – it almost feels like being quietly present in that video call yourself 😊

What I especially like is how you don’t try to hide that initial “droopiness,” but instead let it become part of the movement of the drawing. It feels like you’ve captured a real transition – from a quieter, more tired moment to someone gradually becoming more animated as the conversation unfolds. That gives the piece a very human, story-like quality.

I also really enjoy your material choices here: the watercolour pencils create that soft, slightly uncertain beginning, and then the touches of blue Sailor ink add just the right amount of structure and emphasis afterwards. It’s almost like the conversation itself – tentative at first, then gradually more defined and expressive. And honestly, your “tentative” approach to drawing faces doesn’t read as uncertainty at all in the result – quite the opposite. It gives the sketch a sense of sensitivity and attentiveness that makes it feel very alive.

A very charming piece overall – I always enjoy seeing these captured everyday moments from you.

    1. Thank you so much for that response to my little sketch Rosie! It’s always interesting to hear someone else’s perspective on what I am sketching – because an outside viewer always sees different things and has different interpretations.
