The other day I was going through some of our old boxes of things we collected when we lived in different countries and I found these wooden masks. The one with the big nose is Atsara – a Bhutanese clown character who performs at Tshechus (3-5 day festivals). The character entertains the audience with rude jokes and wears a big red phallic symbol on his head. The other is a Mahakala mask, depicting an enraged deity who wards off negative influences.
