Here is a quick sketch of one of our cats (General Tapioca) in his usual evening spot.

I was looking through some older sketches the day I drew this. I know I shouldn’t care but I used to get several hundred likes on Instagram. Now I struggle to get close to this. My sketches from before also seemed more…careful? So with this one I took more care, used a finer pen and didn’t obsess about filling in all the detail.

This is our cat, Captain Haddock, not staying still as I sketched him. So I just included him twice.

I did this sketch while just doodling away in the evening with “Grey’s Anatomy” plays in the background. After the first few seasons I’ve lost interest, especially in the lead character.

Here is Captain Haddock in his favourite position in the evening – sleeping with his head resting on my wife’s leg. He never does this with me – though he does tend to sleep on my side of the bed and plod around me at night. There is no question who is his favourite person.

This is a cold bag packed with soft drinks and snacks plus some fruit, all ready for a family outing the next day. I love stop sketch brightly coloured things, so this was a perfect subject.

I’ve said before that I should include a cat sketch in every sketchbook (see sketch No.106-3166), so here is a quick painting for this one. Captain Haddock only seems to get larger and now easily hogs the footstool to himself in the evenings.

On this day I was going to sketch outside but even sitting on our balcony I got rained on. Anyway this sketch shows more what I have been doing recently – downloading DAT tapes from years ago. Funny how technology changes so quickly – now these videos look really grainy. This one was done in a new sketchbook made from #CassArt 300gsm smooth watercolour paper. I bought a massive pad of 50 A3 sheets last time was in the UK for 36 pounds, after working out that this was the cheapest watercolour paper I could buy. It’s not bad and I am gradually getting used to it again – though I find the surface tends to pill a bit and rips when I pull off the washi tape.

On this day I wanted to sketch outside but with the day light going fast I only had time to sit on our balcony and sketch this…rushing a bit as it get’s dark so quickly. This is the last sketch in my Daler Rowney sketchbook with 150 gsm cartridge paper. I have enjoyed using it but will be happy to go back to using thicker watercolour paper.
