1162 – Rainy day

Before coming to TCI this time around I bought some galoshes…or what the packet says are “stylish rainshoe covers”. Stylish they are not – I look like an idiot with black plastic bags on my feet. However they did work when it rained heavily the other day and I had to almost wade into work – the paths and roads round here flood very quickly. Crossing the road is like fording a river. I also wore my big green raincoat…and it was so sweaty I think I got wetter than I would have if I’d walked in the rain. So that was my trip to and from work last Wednesday!

1101 – Let’s try the after

I drew this one evening looking out of the window in my apartment. The title is from a new album by a band I love – Broken Social Scene – and I am getting excited because we are planning to see them play in the UK. It was trying hard to rain as I drew this – hence the stormy skies. Thank goodness it has been holding off enough for me to walk to and from my office.

1050 – Rained on at Grace Bay

On Sunday I thought it was about time I visited the famous Grace Bay Beach (named by Trip Advisor as the world’s number 1 beach), but it turned out to be a rainy day. I took shelter under a thatched hut…which was probably exclusively for guests of the resort fronting the beach. However as everyone had rushed inside to get out of the rain, I had the place to myself – except for some swimmers (if you are already wet in the sea, why run for shelter?). The beach does have lovely turquoise water and acres of sand…but best in the world? I thought it was a bit crowded with loungers and that there are more beautiful beaches in the Philippines…but perhaps I am biased.

930 – Rainy day

It was looking miserable and dank outside the other morning. I wanted to sketch outside during this trip but so far I haven’t braved the cold – I’m not used to it. This was the closest I could get – the view from my parents kitchen window. Despite it being grey outside my sketch came out really cheery looking!

839 – Three cars waiting in warm rain

It’s easy to see that I’m back to life in Manila when I am sketching at my daughters gym class. Last Saturday I was still sleepy with jet lag so I snoozed in the car while waiting for the class to finish. Then it poured with rain (nice warm rain compared to the UK) while I was drawing this.

#536 – Night at the cemetery

Late at night on Tuesday 31 we headed to Manila Memorial to camp overnight at the cemetery. It’s traditional here to spend All Saints or All Souls’ Day at family plots to pay respects to the dead – it’s also a sort of family get together. Usually it’s quite fun – with the memorial park filled with families, music, little food stalls and people praying. Unfortunately it rained, so it was pretty miserable – plus of course we were tired! In the morning I did this sketch having slept (partially) in a chair all night. You can see people have set up tents all over the place to shelter. The event goes on all day on the 31st, but we left at 7am to go home.

#499 – Raining while I’m drawing

The weather hasn’t been so great recently – today I had spent only a few minutes in the little garden outside my parents house and it started raining….at least I got a moment to paint the clouds! I added pastel to this…my new sketchbook is encouraging me to go back to using some media I haven’t used in a while.
