122-3536 – On the cob

Here is an evening sketch of something I took out of the fridge. I don’t know why but I’ve never been a big fan of sweetcorn (especially when it’s on the cob – maybe because I end up with so much stuff stuck in my teeth). This sketch makes the sweetcorn look more wrinkly than it actually was.

109-3262 – Ripening papaya

I’ve sketched a papaya many times – though never the inside I suppose – but with a big “red lady” (that’s the type of papaya) like this one, I do like the patterns that form as it ripens. Very soon after this sketch it was all yellow outside and a delicious pinky-red inside.

109-3256 – Drip drip drip

When I sketched this water was leaking into our kitchen cupboards from the apartment above! I had to empty the cupboard, including these kitchen tissue rolls, to stop things getting ruined. Drawing things inside plastic bags is a difficult subject (though @tmlnkv on instagram is brilliant at it), but I did my best.

107-3195 – Hot freebies

Our regular seller at the local market often gives us a few freebies (maybe things they have too many of or that are likely to go off soon) – this time it was some chillies! I wanted to get them looking brighter and shinier in my sketch …next time I’ll do better.

107-3192 – Not for me

Yet another evening sketch – this time of some pasalubong that we bought in Canada for family members. I had to be restrained from eating these. I also struggle with depicting shiny bags like this in sketches – another reason why this subject is not for me.

107-3191 – Branston pickle this time

I made this pickle (I think what they call relish in the USA, though mine is not sweet) on a weekend at the end of July and then it sat on the worktop waiting for me to put labels on it. I know I only drew kimchi a short while ago but it was calling out to be drawn. According to Wikipedia Branston is a pickle first made in 1992 by Crosse & Blackwell in the village of Branston near Burton upon Trent. I just follow a recipe that makes something like it.

107-3181 – Apologies to Andy

It was a rainy day when I sketched this, and a planned sketch-walk (with #UskManila) was cancelled, so I sketched this instead. After she got out of hospital my wife ate a lot of soup. As soon as I bought these, my mind went to Warhol’s famous pop art paintings and I thought I would sketch them too.

107-3178 – Making kimchi again

I spent a good long time making this on one Sunday…when I sketched these jam jars, it was fermenting nicely. The gochugaru chili powder doesn’t quite have the same rich red colour that it had before. Maybe it’s too old (luckily when I tasted the kimchi later, it was fine).
