1018 – Romantic baboy

This is the third sketch I did with Quezon City Sketchers last Sunday. In one of the squares of Centris Walk there was a crowd of people waiting in front of a restaurant called Romantic Baboy Unlimited Korean Grill (Baboy is Tagalog for pig or pork and I assume the restaurant focuses on pork dishes). Their mascot is a pig in a dinner jacket with a rose in it’s mouth, his arm out and his fingers snapping. I couldn’t resist sketching this – Filipinos seem to have a penchant for peculiar restaurant names!

1017 – Centre stage

This is the second sketch I did with Quezon City Sketchers (#kyusisketchers) at Eton Centris Mall last Sunday. As well as the weird mushroom-like objects the open area also has these red gate-like objects – again I have no idea what purpose they serve but they are an excellent subject for sketching. As I began drawing someone kindly stood in front of the stage (set up for some valentine event maybe) and posed (unknowingly) for me.

1016 – Magic mushrooms

On Sunday I joined the Quezon City Urban Sketchers (#kyusisketchers) for a sketch-walk at the open air part of Eton Centris mall. These peculiar huge mushroom-like objects light up at night…and I guess that during the day they provide shade? Otherwise I have no idea what they are really for, though they do make excellent subjects for sketching!

1015 – Busy scene at Tiendesitas

Searching for a shady spot last Saturday I sat in the pet grooming area of Tiendesitas (a shopping area made up of lots of teeny weeny shops). There really was too much going on in this scene but I tried to unify it with the toned down colour scheme…not sure if it really worked.

977 – The Johnn Lemon stand

Here is a sketch from last Saturday at the mall – I didn’t really have time to finish it properly. What attracted me to draw it were the bight colours, that eye which is part of a shop sign and the clever name of the lemon juice stand (and yes they really have spelt John with two n’s).

962 – Golden Christmas giraffes

For some reason African animals are appearing in my sketches a lot recently. A while back I was sketching an elephant sculpture in Lavenham and now for the second time I am seeing giraffes in the Philippines. The owners of SM Aura (a large expensive mall) have, for some peculiar reason, chosen to use these life-sized gold painted animals (along with hippos and an elephant) as the central motif of their Christmas decorations….frankly I don’t see what is wrong with conventional themes!

961 – Zoo coffee

It definitely feels like coming home when I get to sketch a scene like this. On Wednesday we planned some more belated Christmas shopping (we have postponed our “gift giving” so that everyone in the family can be there) at Megamall (a huge mall with a 1km long main concourse). While waiting to meet my wife I had a coffee and couldn’t resist this place which has a huge plastic giraffe in front of it. They also have lots of big stuffed toy animals you can sit next to or better yet, take a selfie with. Only in the Philippines!

919 – Woman in hat not moving

Today I am catching up with finishing some half done sketches from the last few days. This is another one done last Friday, during my Christmas shopping marathon. In this one I was sitting in Krispy Kreme and wondering what to draw. The people were going by so quickly I thought, why not draw the woman in the poster…at least she was staying still!

886 – Laughing or crying?

While I was sketching this at the mall, I noticed a young lady (on the right with long hair) with her shoulders shaking and her head in her hands (though I didn’t draw her this way). At first I thought she was crying and I hesitated…later I could see that she was laughing after all. Somehow the compressed perspective of this sketch makes the mall look very small.
