69-2257 – Hats in Manchester art gallery café

On our first full day in Manchester we went out for a walk around town to do some shopping – we had to buy a few essentials as our luggage didn’t arrive with us. We waited at the carousel for hours in the airport when we arrived, but because the layover in Jeddah was so short, our bags didn’t make it on to the connecting flight. After doing a bit of shopping we ended up in Manchester Art Gallery and had a bite to eat. You can tell it’s cold here when people wear their hats inside.

69-2255 – Profiles to Jeddah

Here is the second sketch I did before leaving Manila – this time at the gate waiting for the plane. It was super crowded…perhaps when this terminal was built planes were smaller – because they certainly don’t have enough seats for the people waiting. Airports are always a great place to sketch people.

69-2250 – Dress fitting

Today we went into Binondo (part of old Manila, also known as Chinatown) as my wife was getting fitted for a dress to wear to a wedding (she is going to be a sponsor). We also went shopping for some jewellery. I only had a few minutes to do the ink work for this – the fitting was very fast – so I added the colour at home from a photo.

69-2248 – Book binding time again

This is the first sketch in a new sketchbook – number 69! At the same time I am in the process of making another one (it makes a change to be in advance as I am often making a new one at the last moment). We are travelling over the festive season so I am making sure I have plenty of sketchbooks!

68-2238 – Commencement

Today I attended my wife’s graduation ceremony – though apparently they call it a “commencement exercise” here. I gather that’s an American thing and it’s called that because when graduation is over, what’s when adult life begins. In my wife’s case I think its more about beginning a new phase in life?

68-2217 – Just a number

Today we spent hours in the Globe Telecom shop at the local mall, sorting out my wife’s phone plan. Most of the time there only seemed to be one person at the counter…hiding behind her laptop, while customers sat around and waited. The staff do their best I guess, but the system seems to require hours of bureaucracy for a simple request.

02-115 – Writing letters with socks on

Here is another one from my archives. This sketch of two of my friends was done when we were in Pembrokeshire on a little holiday, staying in a Youth Hostel. I’ve always struggled sketching faces – Karen (on the right turned out okay), but my attempt at sketching Emma’s face, on the left, was a bit of a disaster.
