This sketch follows the #Sketchtober2023 prompt of ‘watch/clock’ for Day 14. I don’t recall who gave us this clock. It stayed in storage for quite a while, then our previous one (which of course I’ve sketched before) kind of fell apart (it’s above the hob so it got all grungy), so this one went up after we redecorated.

Here is another sketch from our PICC sketch-walk last weekend. After our first latag (Tagalog for laying out…when the group spreads out their sketches), my sketching friend @Paul Paul and I headed off to sketch at the grand staircase of the Plenary Hall and Reception Hall. This is dominated by a steel sculpture mounted on the wall, by Arturo Luz and called “grid”. This is one of the artworks at the PICC that has been declared a National Cultural Treasure. I did google around a bit to see if I could find any blurb about its meaning…but found nothing.

Here is the second sketch I on the PICC sketch-walk with #UskManila – in the upper lobby of the east wing. It was raining a lot that day so most of my sketches were done inside. The mural or painting on the left is called Pagdiriwang in Tagalog, meaning celebration. It was painted in 1976 (and was done in-situ according to our guide) is an abstract expressionist work – according to the plaque the artist took inspiration from festive fok traditions in the Philippines.

Now that I look at this sketch I can see that my perspective is not quite right. Never mind, I enjoyed sketching and painting the bright colours of various cleaning products, even if it was really hot and sweaty while I sat in our smallest bathroom and drew this.

Here is my second sketch from the #UskManila sketch-walk at Manila Metropolitan Theatre. The two-storey lobby or foyer has bronze sculptures of Adam and Eve at each end (the one in my sketch is Adam), done by Italian artist Francesco Ricardo Monti. On the wall above is a reproduction of a mural by national artist Fernando Amorsolo which I think is called The History of Music (according to Wikipedia the original is in the GSIS Museum).

Here is a peek into our bedroom (which is dominated on one wall by some boxed in ducts from the extractor fan in the bathroom…what a wonderful piece of architectural design!) from the living room. At least it gives me those shadows to sketch.

Here is a sketch I did while I watched King Charles’s coronation. I am not a big fan of the UK royal family – especially when the taxpayer has to stump up more than 100 million pounds to pay for the fairly pointless event (during a cost of living crisis). Given that Charles is worth more than 1.8 billion pounds himself, I think he could of chipped in a bit. Nevertheless it was an historic occasion, if a little weird and archaic, so I decided I would at least watch it (well half watch, while I sketched a shelf full of our landlady’s knick-knacks).

Here is my first sketch done with #UskQuezonCity at the Taal Elpasubat 2023 festival (this celebrates the anniversary of the town). Taal is famous for its numerous ancestral houses, many of which are open to the public during this festival. #UskQc joined as an official part of the festival to “draw the heritage” (Guhit ng pamana).
