83-2598 – Mug

I was doing a bit of tidying up last Saturday, I fished out a bunch of forgotten art supplies, and decided to make more use of them. In this sketch I used Derwent Watercolour pencils and a Derwent water soluble graphite pencil. So, no ink!

82-2589 – Shoe time

My favourite subjects for an evening sketch after working (and struggling to think of something to draw) are fruit, something from the pantry or shoes. I’ve no doubt sketched this pair of shoes before. They are rather tired old Hush Puppies – the rubber sole fell apart a while back (rubber just disintegrates in this humid climate, after a while), but a handy guy at the market stitched a brand new sole onto them.

82-2588 – Flat Prosecco

With this sketch I am back to drawing things around the house. This bottle of Prosecco was given to us by a friend …then partially consumed by some other friends. Unfortunately they didn’t drink it all in one go and shaved the cork down (too much) to get it back in the top…so the Prosecco went flat. We still drank it though!

82-2582 – Another one bites the dust

Another piece of our kitchen equipment has packed up – this time a hand blender. The motor seems to have given up, so it looks like we will have to replace it. It’s served us well for a good few years, so it deserved a goodbye sketch. They don’t seem to make things to last these days.

82-2571 – Butternut

We do our vegetable shopping at the local wet market, just a short walk away – and I usually buy from the same stall. When I was there the other day and was looking at the pumpkins and squashes, one of the sellers called out “butternut!” and pointed to this. I actually wanted a butternut squash for a meal I was cooking, so I bought it…I’m not sure it really is a butternut squash though…the flesh seemed too pale when I cut it open. Who cares anyway…it tasted great and was fun to sketch!

82-2568 – Salt pig and ramekin dishes

Here is another sketch of a Christmas present I was given – this was from my sister. For a change I started this sketch with Derwent Watercolour Pencils and added ink lines and shading afterwards. This is also my first sketch in a newly made sketchbook – which I partly made as a sample for the sketchbook binding workshop I did last December. It’s made with super-cheap Corona 250gsm watercolour paper which absorbs the ink rather too quickly (like blotting paper) and will only take a few washes of watercolour before it starts to pill.

81-2545 – New boots

This is my first sketch in a new sketchbook – number 81. For a change it’s not one that I made myself, but one that I won at the raffle with #UskQuezonCity at the sketchbook binding workshop that I did earlier in December. It’s a square format Zen Sangam Watercolor Art Journal with 25 sheets of Cold Pressed 250 GSM paper and was kindly donated to the raffle by a fellow sketcher Ever Villacruz (@pamatayhomesick). These hiking boots are my daughters Christmas gift to my wife.

78-2480 – White tubs waiting

Here is a sketch that has been languishing in my sketchbook for a while. For quite a while we have been buying laundry detergent from #MessyBessy (which uses natural plant-derived ingredients and provides jobs to disadvantaged young adults). Another good thing they do is take back the tubs and reuse them – as well as giving you a discount on your next purchase…we have hoarded quite a few as this sketch shows. Unfortunately they are on a “recovery journey” to improve their products at the moment, so are not taking orders, so our collection of tubs isn’t going anywhere.
