1824 – Papaya again

I’ve drawn papayas several times – I love the colour of them. This one had a slight green tinge as it was not quite ripe when I drew it. When they are perfectly ripe we chop them up and add a dribble of calamansi juice…delicious.

1816 – Going bananas

This sketch was drawn when I was really tired and couldn’t think of anything to draw. When I feel like that in the evening, I just draw any old thing that happens to be in front of me and in this case it was fruit on our coffee table.

1807 – Dragon fruity

Last week my wife came back from a trip with 5 kilos of dragon fruit and we have been eating them ever since. These ones have deep pink flesh and when you eat a lot of them…well it’s like eating a lot of beetroot! I had to tweak the colour of this sketch after scanning it, because our scanner will not scan that kind of pink (it comes out red)…but the fruit really are this colour.

1781 – Fruit on the way home

On our way back from our trip out of town on Sunday we bought loads of avocados and Indian mangos from a roadside stall. Fruit bought out in the provinces is always so much cheaper…so usually we go a bit mad and buy far too much as you can see from this sketch.

1770 – It’s not what you draw

I forgot to follow the #WorldWatercolorMonth prompt of “reflection” yesterday…I’m not sure if I will follow the one today either! Anyway that doesn’t matter and for me it doesn’t really matter what I sketch each day…it’s just the act of sketching that I enjoy.

1729 – Ripening mangoes

This is my first sketch in a newly made sketchbook – this time I am trying out the very expensive Hahnemühle Britannia 300 gsm hot pressed paper. So far I am finding it a bit tricky – it’s not as immediately absorbent as the paper I used last, so the paint washes around the surface for a while. It’s going to take a while to get used to that. Anyway we bought some Guimaras mangoes from a friend on Thursday, so to avoid having to think too hard, I chose them as my subject to sketch.

1720 – God is in the house

The title of this is from a Nick Cave song from an album (No More Shall We Part) that I have been listening to rather obsessively recently. Somehow it seemed appropriate seeing how much I have been sketching in the house since the pandemic started. I’ve sketched fruit on our coffee table many times but I still see something different each time.

1718 – Half a melon

Here is another sketch I did while chatting to my mum on the phone. My favourite melons are actually cantaloupe. I’ll never forget buying a huge one when my wife and children arrived in Jordan after a few months alone there. It had such a glorious scent. The cantaloupes here tend to be a bit small and tasteless in comparison.
