2035 – Fruit night again

This sketch was done last Thursday while chatting to my friend @TheArtofBeingPresent. I was inspired by the sketch artist @joanna_bonar_tatarska who does terrific but simple sketches of fruit and veg and had done a wonderful drawing of an avocado. I don’t think mine came out as well, but these avocado (bought on the way back from Cavite) tasted lovely, so who cares!

1972 – From the tree

This week we got some satsuma’s with our usual fruit and veg delivery. I thought I’d better sketch them quickly before they are all snaffled up. When they come with leaves and twigs attached I tend to think that means they are fresher …but that may just be a marketing ploy.

1963 – Pomelo and its shadow

Sometimes just a very simple line and splash of paint is all that is needed for a sketch – and sometimes all I have time and energy for. Without googling it, Pomelos are a bit like grapefruit – but with firmer segments and not so sour.

1939 – I prefer them peeled

Usually, if/when I buy fresh pineapple, I pick it out at the market and they peel it in front of you – if you’ve ever seen it done somewhere where pineapples are grown, its quite a skill to behold. Somehow they manage to remove all the seeds and leave you with the best bit by making spiralling cuts with a super sharp knife. When I do it myself its a reall mess.

1859 – Four fruits

I’m pretty sure I’ve sketched something and called it “four fruits” before – but as I was sitting on the couch looking at the coffee table, just doodling whatever happened to be in front of me….well fruit it was.

1839 – Last fruit

I usually sketch without an end result in mind but last night I started this thinking I would do a simple drawing of a bowl of fruit….then I thought I’d limit my palette to just just Paynes Grey and Raw Sienna. Well, none of that really came to be and I just doodled away adding details and more colours – that’s my favourite way to sketch.

1830 – Plantain

If you’ve never eaten plantain, they are a type of banana, often cooked when still green, though you can eat them just like bananas when they ripen off. This bunch is still green except for one solitary one on the end which got eaten this morning. Why the seller decided to put a label on each piece I don’t know…maybe because people are likely to buy only one at a time?
