Sticking to my habit of sketching whatever is in front of me, the other night I sketched one of our dinner plates, with the scraps of a meal. That green peel is from a dalandan – a type of orange that you get in this part of the world.

My wife says I have done two hundred sketches of bananas. That’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I have done a lot. I have no problem with repeating a subject as long as I see something different each time – which I did this time. Different coloured stripes and shadows.

The first time I experienced durian was when I lived in Cambodia and my neighbour gave me a section as a gift. I put it in the fridge but when I came home from work, I thought it had gone off and threw it away. I only realised later it was supposed to smell like that! That was 30 years ago. Now I can’t get enough of durian – there is something euphoric about eating it and it’s my favourite fruit.

The colour of this fruit is absolutely amazing – even the flesh has this gorgeous deep pink/purple colour. However they don’t taste of anything very much!

Here is an evening sketch done from my usual spot on the couch, of fruit as usual but with a plate I haven’t sketched before. I can’t recall where we got this plate from (it could have been a wedding present), but it’s been in the cupboard for ages and I thought it deserved to be used, rather than hidden away.

As usual after a visit out of town, we have lots and lots of fruit, including some lovely sweet pineapples. Here is one of them, just ripened off perfectly and ready for peeling, de-seeding and of course, eating.

I am jumping ahead a couple of days with this one (as some sketches before this are not finished) – to post yet another drawing of bananas. This is a huge bunch of señorita bananas that my wife brought back from a trip to Indang. Bananas in this part of the world come in huge bunches, (in this case still on a branch!) – and I can’t help comparing it to buying a measly bunch with two or three tasteless bananas in the UK, all wrapped in plastic packaging.

This is the second sketch I did last Saturday…we were just sitting down to watch a bit of TV and I couldn’t resist doing a quick sketch while we re-watched Stranger Things. I’ve drawn bunches of bananas many times, but when I have itchy fingers they still make a perfectly good subject.
