Here is my last sketch in Sri Lanka – done at the airport of course. I would rather have had sat right next to the window to get a better view of the planes, but that space seemed to be reserved for business class!

Here is the second sketch I did in Viharamahadevi park on my last full day in Sri Lanka. The park is full of enormous old trees, but not many benches! Eventually I found a spot in a small gazebo but the trees in my view were relatively small.

On my last full day in Colombo I managed to squeeze in a walk to this park (which I think used to be Victoria park). It’s full of wonderful massive old trees plus a few statues including this Buddha. There was a bit of competition for the few benches in the park, so I perched on a tree stump to sketch this…then towards the end got bitten on the bum by a nasty looking red and black ant!

After another 7 hour minivan ride from Kilinochchi to Colombo I checked back in to the Colombo Court Hotel. This is the view out the window. Nothing spectacular, but the last room looked on to a weeny courtyard and in Kilinochchi the frosted glass gave me no view at all.

I’ve had too much work to do recently but I found a little takeaway pizza place round the corner, so I ordered a nice veggie pizza to eat in my room.

A colleague recommended eating at this place, quite near where I’m staying. It has a lovely atmosphere and lots of art on display!

Here is the second sketch I did on my day off, near Independence Square in Colombo. This building just next to the independence memorial used to be an asylum but has since been converted into an arcade. My pen started to run out of ink while I was sketching this, so I ended up using a lot of fine lines.

On Sunday I walked to independence square to do some sketching. The square has features a huge open sided memorial hall with fancy ornamental columns. I sat on the steps of this and sketched the view looking along independence avenue. The statue is of the first prime minister of the country Don Stephen Senanayake.

On Saturday I had a bit of time off and after a short walk to the coast nearby (I realised later that I should have googled where to go, as there are nicer spots to visit in other parts of town), I ended up sitting in a cafe having a milkshake and sketched the view opposite me. I think this is the gateway to a school.
