1485 – The milk bar

On Friday I finally got out of the house for a while – I was in Global City for the day, getting our car serviced and getting some checkups. Having a bit of time to kill while waiting for the car to be ready I thought I’d do a sketch along the High Street of BGC. Unfortunately there are signs all over saying “no loitering”, so in order to sketch an outside view I got a coffee and sat outside Starbucks. The little place I sketched is a milk bar apparently – in front is a granite faced water feature – which is empty at the moment.

1024 – Sunrise at the egg shack

Just for a change I have included my notes on this one: If I’m in BGC (Bonifacio Global City – a part of Metro Manila being developed as a new business district at a breakneck pace by the Ayala family) I can’t resist the opportunity to sketch – there is so much of interest to draw there. As I was there early morning (yesterday) I could also sit somewhere where I’d normally get roasted in the sunshine. I do like salted eggs but noticed that this place says they come direct from Singapore – why I don’t know because salted duck eggs (as well as century eggs and pregnant eggs …don’t ask a vegetarian) are a speciality in the Philippines.

1011 – Waiting to buy paint

On Monday, having dropped our car in for a service, I had some time while waiting for the Arts Bar to open (where I buy my favourite paint, Daniel Smith). Naturally I used up my time by doing a sketch. This view looks from the Serendra area towards the BGC High Street. It was a lovely sunny morning.

995 – Two people bowing

On Sunday we had lunch at Motto Motto (a Japanese restaurant in the Serendra/BGC high street area). The food was nice but a bit pricey and in tiny weeny portions. We sat outside because the AC inside was too cold and this was our view. My wife said these street lights look like two people bowing…I think they look like people hugging – I don’t know if they are supposed to be sculptures or just fancy lamp posts!

874 – Partial views

Yesterday I was in Global City again, so I stopped at a random coffee shop to sketch. This was the view I had out the window…bits and pieces of lots of different things. Unsurprisingly this includes a crane – this part of Metro Manila used to have lots of open lots and parks, but the developers are frantically building more and more blocks of offices and apartments. I do wonder who lives or works in all these buildings.

864 – There’s a deer in the bushes

Last Thursday I was in Global City after getting a health check up. I couldn’t miss the opportunity to sketch something so I got a cheap cup of coffee at Seattle’s Best, sat outside and drew this. I only noticed the deers head in the bush when I started drawing – no idea why it’s there….maybe part of some topiary?

859 – Big balls

Here is the sketch I did on Sunday, sitting in a cafe called ‘Local Edition’. These huge spheres are just a few of the decorative sculptural objects in the area…certainly good for sketching. Big balls was the first title that came to mind.

Day 081 – Sculptures in High Street

ACE.081-sculptures at high street 220616-2

These are two pieces of public art in High Street Bonifacio Global City. The bear is called Tinstaej #85 (There Is No Such Thing As Endless Joy) by Conrado Velasco. The orange/red things are free standing floor chimes made of metal. It’s called Presence, by Reg Yuson. People are supposed to nudge the chimes to make sounds and bring good vibes to the park [according to the BGC website – http://www.bgc.com.ph/article/presence%5D.

I drew this in graphite pencil, followed by watercolour, chalk pastel and a bit of watercolour pencil. I recently rediscovered an old Derwent water soluble pencil – 8B I think – it makes great dark lines when dipped in water.
