69-2259 – Loxford Street

Here is the view out of the window of my daughters flat. The red brick buildings in the UK are such a lovely colour, so I wanted the chance to sketch them. On the other hand I haven’t plucked up the courage to sit outside and sketch yet (apparently winter only just officially started, but it’s freezing cold for me), so sketching the view out the window seemed like a good solution.

1294 – Queen’s Park

Last Sunday morning, while waiting for my daughter to get out of bed, instead of hanging around doing noting I went for a little walk near her house and sketched this. I had frozen fingers even though I was wearing new fingerless gloves – yet there were boys kicking a ball around, wearing shorts…I’m certainly not acclimatised to the UK.

946 – Two horses by the fire

Over last weekend I went down to the west of the UK to visit some friends. The weather was really foul on Saturday – blowing a gale, rainy and cold. So instead of going out we sat by the fire, watched Strictly Come Dancing, ate dinner and drank G&T’s. Of course I didn’t concentrate on Strictly but sketched instead. My friends have two horses stabled nearby, but in this drawing you can see the legs of some cast metal ones.

941 – Lavenham fair and Ferris wheel

Each year Lavenham holds a little 3 day festive fair with stalls selling anything from cheese to jewellery. On Sunday I nipped out to the square and sat on a bench to sketch in the cold. As well as stalls there was a big Ferris wheel with someone on a microphone calling “one more for the next ride” all the time.

931 – The Cock Horse

Finally I managed to brave the cold (wearing 5 layers) and went out in the afternoon to sketch this the day before yesterday. This is one of the local pubs in Lavenham. I think the atmosphere in this sketch depicts more closely how it really felt while I was drawing…my fingers were numb by the time I finished!

#568 – Ice skating at Brighton pavilion

Our first stop in the UK was Sussex University where our daughter is studying. On Tuesday she took us in to Brighton where there is an ice skating rink set up outside the Royal Pavilion. I did this sketch from the warmth of a coffee shop, while watching our daughters skate. I got the dates mixed up on the drawing because of the jet lag!
