86-2678-9 – Stabilo

On Sunday 21 April we went to a Stabilo Boss launching event (at SM North EDSA) for their Nature Colour marker pens, with #UskQuezonCity. I always thought Stabilo only made highlighter pens! I started this sketch while Millie (@cmdjdraws) gave an introduction to #UrbanSketching and then continued when Don Tantiado (@don_candrawlines) did a demo using the markers (that’s his drawing on the screen in my sketch). The second sketch (bit of a disaster) is what I drew (coloured with Stabilo Boss markers), when Don gave us an exercise to draw the person next to us.

86-2677 – All sketching the same

This is the sketch I did at the Dia del Libro event with the Instituto Cervantes and Enrique Flores on Saturday 20th April in Ayala Triangle Gardens, Makati. During the ‘show and tell’ of our efforts, Enrique commented that few of us had captured the feel of the event or included people, although the gardens were crowded, and lastly that having sketched as a group for some time (that is #UrbanSketchersQuezonCity), a lot of us are starting to sketch in the same style. All fair points but I enjoyed the sketching all the same.

84-2630-1 – Many Views, One Story

These are the sketches I did at Workshop 2B “Many Views, One Story: Community Sketching Experience” with Maria Regina Tuazon, during the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC event. The workshop used a set of cards developed by Marc Taro Holmes in 2016, to encourage the group to sketch different views of the same place, arriving at a collective story (the venue was the Quezon Memorial Shrine).

We were also encouraged to write a line or two on the sketch, to tell the story of the setting, highlight particular features or overhead conversations. I picked cards suggesting I sketch the high point (first sketch in this post) and a garden feature like a fountain.

84-2627-9 – Drawing on the move

These are the sketches I did at workshop 1A: Drawing on the Move with Genine Carvalheira during the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC event, with the Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global). The workshop was about “learning to draw with speed and confidence” – so Genine had us sketch the the back of the Quezon Heritage House in QC Memorial Circle.

After some guidance (and a demo from her) she had us do it again…this time in three minutes. The middle sketch was done when we did a little walkabout near the park. I learnt to be a bit more fluid in the way I draw….if I want to draw super-fast!

84-2624-5 – 45 second faces

During the “Drink and Draw” evening with #UskQuezonCity and the Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global), one of the board members, Eric, encouraged us to try drawing faces really quickly starting at a minute or so and going down to 20 seconds. The first of these sketches shows Eric and Don.

In the second one I wrote peoples names as the faces became unrecognisable! I added the watercolour later to try and make them look a little more human!

84-2623 – Mohan Ysa Shilpi Ce

Here is another sketch done during the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC event, with the Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global) at Urban Chick in QC. I think we had been discussing drawing faces and people, so I gave it a go – there are lots more faces coming in my next post too…

84-2622 – Urban Chick

Here is my first sketch (of many) done during the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC (translated as “Meeting Place in Quezon City”) event. The Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global) were visiting for a series of events and activities. For me this kicked off with a “Drink and Draw” social evening at a little restaurant called Urban Chick along Maginhawa Street in QC. I arrived pretty early (I wasn’t sure how bad the traffic would be), so I started this sketch before the place filled up.

84-2617 – San Augustin Church

Here is the last sketch I did with Instituto Cervantes de Manila on 10th March. This church was completed in 1607, during the Spanish colonial period, and is the oldest stone church in the Philippines. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sadly I couldn’t go in because a wedding was going on. The car parking attendants (who were hanging out where I sat and sketched) also told me that I would have to get special permission to sketch inside. This one is done in a newly made sketchbook which uses Claire Fontaine Goldline 300gsm paper, which I bought at #ArtCaravan. It’s taking me a while to get used to it, because it’s not hot press, like I usually use.
