69-2270 – Eurostar sleepers

Here is my first sketch of 2023, done on the Eurostar train from London to Paris. Our journey went smoothly (with some help from our daughter), despite having far too many bags as usual. These two people were having a nice snooze – my depiction of the woman (yes, its a woman…although my hatch lines make it look like she has a beard and moustache) didn’t work out as I hoped, but I was pleased with the sleeping guy.

Happy New Year and belated Merry Christmas, so anyone who has followed my sketching efforts over the past few years. Thank you to all for their comments, likes, feedback and encouragement.

69-2268 – Stansted station

Here is a quick sketch I did on our journey from Suffolk to London. It was cold and damp as we waited for the train but we had extra time to sit and have some refreshments, so I decided to try and draw the train. Normally I would have finished this off more carefully, but as I’d got the perspective wrong, I lost my enthusiasm.

69-2262 – After a wet walk

Come to think of it, I sketched this before we went for a very wet walk in the Peak District…but never mind. Despite the temperature being only 3 degrees we decided to go for a walk to Mam Tor, getting off the train at Edale. We almost made it all the way up, but it got so misty and we got so wet, we turned round and went for a pub lunch.

69-2260 – Report anything suspicious

This sketch was done on a crowded train from Liverpool to Manchester, after we had visited our daughters’ house and helped out Santa with some rather late Christmas shopping. There are 6 people in this painting, can you see them all? The sign at the top says to ‘report anything suspicious’ – I am not sure if that includes someone sketching…I certainly got some odd looks.

1981 – Grey on the train

On Friday we took a train into London to see our youngest daughter and said goodbye to Suffolk for a while. We struggled a bit with our huge bags on the train, but after cramming ourselves into the seats I managed to do this sketch (adding the paint later).

1234 – Toronto train

I drew this in transit – but not in the departure lounge. The system in Canada means that even if you are on an international connecting flight you have to exit, collect your bags and check in again. Thant meant waiting several hours for the check in desk to open…and only one cafe to sit at. The airport has a light train that connects between terminals (why don’t we have that in Manila?) and the city…but of course it moved too fast for me to draw it!
