1071 – Boat out of water

This boat (technically a double outrigger Banca – the type of boat used for fishing and transportation in the Philippines) was pulled up on the slipway the whole time we were at the Portulano Resort. I sketched this while lounging on our balcony soaking up the atmosphere. It’s also the last page in my first handmade sketchbook.

1050 – Rained on at Grace Bay

On Sunday I thought it was about time I visited the famous Grace Bay Beach (named by Trip Advisor as the world’s number 1 beach), but it turned out to be a rainy day. I took shelter under a thatched hut…which was probably exclusively for guests of the resort fronting the beach. However as everyone had rushed inside to get out of the rain, I had the place to myself – except for some swimmers (if you are already wet in the sea, why run for shelter?). The beach does have lovely turquoise water and acres of sand…but best in the world? I thought it was a bit crowded with loungers and that there are more beautiful beaches in the Philippines…but perhaps I am biased.

1047 – John’s ocean view beach bar

As I drew this, sitting on a log on the beach, the sun was setting and in the background I could hear reggae music, the sound of a group of guys loudly slapping down dominoes and an evangelical preacher of some sort praising the lord (and his congregation calling out hallelujah every now and then). Wafting in the breeze is the smell of the days catch being sold nearby and the salty smell of the sea. Yes I’m very very lucky to be here and paid for it to boot!

1045 – Bohio sun

Arriving in Grand Turk last Sunday, after checking in, my first port of call was Bohio Dive Resort – the nearest place down the beach to get something to eat. Problem was, I was too early to eat so I had no choice (shame) but to drink beer and sketch while I waited for their kitchen to open. Even after that it took 1 hour for my pizza order so I was starving by the time I ate.

1042 – Condos starting at US$600,000

On Saturday I was lucky enough to have some free time so I walked to the nearest beach, which wasn’t so far from my apartment. I had to detour to avoid some unpleasant guard dogs (just doing their job I suppose) and despite the beach being public, access is not easy. All the massive houses and condos along the shore hog the space. Anyway it was a beautiful spot and I had it almost to myself. I thought it was peak season but I suppose everyone was at Grace Bay Beach, while I was at Sunset Beach?
