121-3523 – Invasion

According to a couple of Google image searches this is a Lanzones (Lansium Domesticum) tree – a type of mahogany tree. Lanzones fruits are round like large grapes, but with a tough skin and juicy segments inside. It appeared on our balcony, out of nowhere a few years ago, then killed off the bamboo that use to grow in the same pot, and is now huge. Apparently fruit eating birds (like a Bulbul) probably ate the fruit from a nearby tree or garbage bin, then perched on our railing and crapped out the seeds into the pot! I pruned it a few days after this sketch to make it a bit more manageable (lopping the crown completely off)…by some miracle I didn’t kill it, and it is now starting to grow new shoots below where I cut off the trunk.

116-3410 – Compelled to sketch everyday

If I don’t use my preppy pen (with the blue sludgy Kung Te-Cheng Noodlers ink) every day, it dries up (update….even every day is not enough…it just dries up anyway). I had to work hard to get the ink flowing when I did this sketch…I next tried a little bit of damp tissue in the cap but that didn’t work either. This is one of the plants (one of the few that grows despite our “black thumbs”) that grows well on our balcony.

107-3207 – End of working day

As I drew this it was the end of my working day. It was dusk – very briefly. There was a bird singing it’s heart out and I could still hear it above the roar of the traffic. The cats were getting antsy because it was their dinner time. But I was enjoying the riot of plants on our balcony. The one with love heart shaped leaves is going mad. Below our balcony I could hear the neighbours taking out their trash (and accidentally smashing a glass bottle). My tea was waiting for me.

I’ve started a new assignment and have a lot of background reading to do (which I don’t find to be very exciting)…so I rewarded myself by doing this sketch (in the clubhouse of the development where we live), after I’d gone through a 70 page document and made notes.
