1238 – Dragon box

I have missed a few days sketching and posting, not least because our internet went down for a couple of days. I am also way behind with #Inktober! All the same here is a drawing for the prompt of dragon. This is a wooden box we bought in Bhutan when we used to live there – lovely design…difficult to sketch!

1117 – The joker

The other day I was going through some of our old boxes of things we collected when we lived in different countries and I found these wooden masks. The one with the big nose is Atsara – a Bhutanese clown character who performs at Tshechus (3-5 day festivals). The character entertains the audience with rude jokes and wears a big red phallic symbol on his head. The other is a Mahakala mask, depicting an enraged deity who wards off negative influences.

903 – Prayer for Samoeun

This is a prayer wheel from Bhutan – you spin it in your hand to say prayers (which are inscribed on the barrel). As I was drawing this I thought of our old friend Chap Samoeun who passed away a few days ago. We worked with him in Cambodia for many year and loved his gentle and fun loving attitude to life – despite the incredible struggles he went though and survived during the Khmer Rouge years.
