Here’s yet another sketch in the hotel room from last night. This is in ink and mostly watercolour pencil…trying to get a more abstract feel to it. I’m looking forward to getting out to sketch on the weekend if the weather stays dry!

#323 – Lamp at 1am
Here is my first sketch back in Beirut – surprise surprise, it’s done in my hotel room! This was done really late at night (actually early morning today) in ink, watercolour and watercolour pencils.

#307 – Man in black in the airport
So you can tell from the title that I have been on the move again – my assignment in Lebanon is finished for the moment. This is drawn in ink with some water added, at the airport in Beirut, which has vast empty departure gates with low ceilings and dull grey and blue decor.

#305 – Dar Bistro corner
I promised myself I’d eat and sketch at Dar Bistro and Books again before I left Beirut – so here it is. This time I ate Gnocchi in a tomato and parmesan sauce – delicious. In the foreground is one of their patio heaters – but it wasn’t needed that evening. I love the atmosphere in this place – they even played some of my favorite music!

#304 – Let’s Eat
Last night I ate at a little place called Let’s Eat. There wasn’t a soul there, but I had a nice lentil soup and some avocado and potato salad. The decor was mostly black and white, so there is only a little colour in my ink and watercolour sketch.

Another doodle from last night…drawn because I just felt the urge to draw! This time I used ink, watercolour and some chalk pastel.

#302 – Public beach
This morning I went on a walk out to Ramlet Al-Baida – the public beach in Beirut. Apparently this is one the last open spaces left in Beirut and it’s threatened by luxury development. The place was pretty empty (it’s winter here) with just a few forlorn looking thatched sun shades and some children’s swings – but I did a sketch anyway.

#301 – Chopsticks
Last night I ate at a restaurant called Chopsticks. There was virtually no-one on the second floor where I ate, so despite best intentions I had to draw an empty room. As part of a Chinese New Year promotion, I drew a card from a pack – and pulled out a rooster card, with the result that everything, including desert and a drink, was free! How lucky.
