100-3010 – Artists tools

After all that urban sketching in Vigan here is one of something more mundane. These are materials I use for most sketches – I do like to challenge myself sometimes by trying something new, but for the last few years I have always gone back to using my reliable Sailor fude fountain pen. I fill it with #Noodlers Lexington Grey ink and carry it around in a little glass bottle that used to have tiger balm in it. My go to pen for beefing up the darks and adding a few black lines is, a #UniBall Eye Micro.

Here are the last two sketches I did with Eric David and the #SilawArtistCollective, the other day. Like the others, these were meant to be just 15 minute poses, but I think we went over that time. As before the model was @liza_paxley.

96-2903 – Boots

This is the second sketch I did with with Eric David and the #SilawArtistCollective, the other day. I think this is the one I was most satisfied with – I think the more splashy style (much more like the paintings I did when I was at University), was boosted by the (rather strong) gin cocktail that we were very kindly given! I am pretty sure we went over our 15 minute time for this pose…but the model (@liza_paxley) was very patient and stayed nice and still.

#596 – At the hairdressers

Today, after doing some veggie shopping at the local market, my wife had her hair cut. While waiting for her I took the opportunity to sketch this. It was pretty cramped in the waiting area, so I finished off some of the colouring at home using a reference photo.

#530 – Coach resting

My daughter is entering a gym competition so I’m spending many more evenings at her club…not really watching but sketching instead. Instead of drawing the gym equipment like I usually do, I tried to capture a bigger space in this one.

#455 – Waiting at Italianni’s

ACE.455-waiting at italiannis 170723-2-wm

On Sunday we took our daughter and all her friends out for a meal to celebrate her 18th birthday (after they had played laser tag)…while we waited for them to show up at the restaurant I dashed off a quick sketch of some other diners. For this one I splashed on the watercolour first (not necessarily in all the right places) and used a trusty UniBall pen to define things more clearly.

#296 – Merry-go-round

Finally got out to sketch on Saturday – but despite the blue skies it was freezing cold so I rushed this a bit. I used watercolour and a Uni Pin pen for a change but still prefer water-soluble ink in my fountain pen. This scene is outside the cinema again – an interesting mix of modern and traditional architecture with a merry-go-round thrown in for good measure.
