97-2923 – Thinking of Syria

I am skipping ahead to post this one. The day I sketched this we had been watching the news closely all day, as finally Assad was kicked out of Syria – feeling hopeful, trepidatious and emotional. I shed a tear when I watched Syrian refugees on the Lebanese border so excited that they would finally be able to go home. We spent more than three years living and working in Syria (these blue glasses were bought at a glass blowing workshop in Damascus) and had to leave in 2011 when the war started. It was heartbreaking watching the country descend into war, division and chaos, after having enjoyed living and working with such wonderful people. Let us hope that peace and stability for all Syrians, whatever race, belief or gender, will now come about.

87-2710 – Three for three

These three little glasses/cups come from three different countries that I have had the privilege of working in. The one at the back is a tea glass from Turkey (not actually bought when I was there last year), the glass on the left is a tea glass from Cambodia (nothing posh but the most basic type made from recycled glass) and the cup on the right comes from a set of espresso coffee cups from Syria.

2013 – More discoveries

Here is another item that I unearthed during some spring cleaning. I found we have a nice little set of espresso coffee cups from our time in Syria. Now I can drink espresso in the mornings from a proper cup!

1602 – Christmas slipper

I’ve been a bit lax with posting my sketches recently – but I am still doing them each day. This is another of our odd Christmas decorations – this is actually a souvenir I was given when I finished work in Syria, but we hang it up every Christmas as it looks kind of festive (to me).

1457 – Memory box

This little box is something I was given as a leaving present by colleagues after working in Syria for 3 years. I was working with Palestinian Refugees hence the map inlaid on the top. Happy memories.
