84-2623 – Mohan Ysa Shilpi Ce

Here is another sketch done during the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC event, with the Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global) at Urban Chick in QC. I think we had been discussing drawing faces and people, so I gave it a go – there are lots more faces coming in my next post too…

84-2622 – Urban Chick

Here is my first sketch (of many) done during the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC (translated as “Meeting Place in Quezon City”) event. The Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global) were visiting for a series of events and activities. For me this kicked off with a “Drink and Draw” social evening at a little restaurant called Urban Chick along Maginhawa Street in QC. I arrived pretty early (I wasn’t sure how bad the traffic would be), so I started this sketch before the place filled up.

84-2621 – Workout

I bought some weights for my wife the other day. The 4kg ones she already has are much more compact…these 3kg ones are huge! Anyway I thought they would make a nice subject to sketch…and a chance to use lots of Opera Pink paint!

84-2620 – Pickle then sketch

The other day I bought green chillies at the supermarket, but they only seemed to sell them in huge quantities. We only use a few each week at best, and then the rest of them go off, so I looked up a recipe to pickle them. Naturally after doing the pickling I sketched the result. We ate some of them with a meal a few days later – they turned out to be delicious, not too spicy (I took out the seeds) and crunchy!

84-2618 – Damm’s Restobar

On Sunday 10 March my wife and I went for a cycle ride along part of Marikina River, where they they have quite a long cycle path. We started at what is called the Skating/Bicycle Rink and cycled north for a few kilometres. Then on the way back we went a bit further south to the Chinese Pagoda where we had a lovely breakfast at Damm’s Restobar. Next to us in the restaurant were bikers from the Philippine Confederation of Senior Cyclists…maybe we should join them! I tried using the reverse side of my new paper for this one…but it (understandably) didn’t take up the paint very well.

83-2614 – Manila Catheral

This is the first sketch I did after the initial talk of Enrique Flores at the ICM workshop on Saturday. Enrique gave us 40 tips on sketching, one of which was about including people to give a sense of scale – so I deliberately included the crowds outside the Cathedral. For a change I also masked off the edges of this sketch before painting (instead of using a wobbly line)…got to get some washi tape though.

83-2612 – Pot of pens

I found this little plastic pot (which I think is supposed to be for cutlery on a draining board) in amongst some of our junk and have been using it to hold some of my excess sketching materials. I thought it would make a nice easy subject for an evening sketch…plus I love that green colour (I used Cobalt Green – Holbein Water Colour).

83-2611 – Fallen cranes in the sunset

This sketch was done early one evening when my wife and I went for a walk down the road, to where DMCI (the developers of the place where we live), store all their cranes and equipment. I think these are components of “tower cranes” that can be reassembled as needed. It was a really complicated scene to sketch and I got a bit lost in the detail…so I will probably try the subject again one day.

83-2610 – Grips

So, after a lot of #UrbanSketches this post goes back to an evening sketch of something around the home. I bought this pair of flip-flops (what people call slippers here) in Bantayan Island, over the New Year, when our luggage didn’t arrive with us. They were just the first pair I saw in the Hyper-Mart and they have super knobbly soles.
