93-2835 – The sewing machine is out

When I sketched this I had just watched a “draw tip Tuesday” video which focussed on contrast – I always find these videos inspiring. Meanwhile my wife has been making cushion covers for her office kneeling stool from some old fabric we bought in Syria. In this sketch I tried to get the cosy atmosphere and light from the small strip-light above her desk, but struggled with keeping the brush (an unbranded water-brush given to me by a friend) clean – my Faber Castell one is definitely the best…if only the nylon tip wasn’t so ragged.

1817 – Sewing weights

With one day to go (before heading back to the UK) my daughter was still frantically sewing an outfit (creatively put together from a second hand blouse and skirt) to wear at a festival in the UK. She used these old juggling balls, that have been laying around getting dusty in our house, as weights while she was cutting out the fabric.

1524 – Soldiering on regardless

Sometimes I immediately feel, as soon as my pen hits the paper, that a sketch is not going to work out to my liking. This was one of those (a sketch of my daughters sewing basket, sadly left behind), but I took my usual approach and just carried on with the sketch regardless!

1519 – Sewing kit spots

Here is the sketch I did this evening while the TV blared in the background. This is my daughters homemade sewing kit – it was one of her first sewing projects and a bit rough and ready. Now she makes wonderful prom dresses and up-cycles my old shirts!

1515 – Threads and duck

Our daughter is continuing to pack for university. Unfortunately she doesn’t have space for this cute little tin box of threads (which my parents gave her). She is taking her sewing machine with her though! I grabbed the box, taking an opportunity to sketch something that would use a complete rainbow of colours.
