I’d like to say this sketch was spontaneous so that it fits with the next prompt for day 17 of #WorldWatercolorMonth, but I knew I would do a quick sketch when we stopper by Manila Memorial Park today. We haven’t visited for ages because of the Coronavirus. I did this sketch in watercolour first and then added the ink when I got home.

Here is a (bit of a muddled) sketch I did at our family get together at memorial park for All Saints Day (called Day of the Dead in Latin America). It rained most of the night but with pavilion tents set up everyone managed to say dry. After a few hours (at 1:30am) I retired to the car and fell asleep!

I missed one sketch because I spent the night of 31st with the whole extended family at the memorial park, where my wife’s father and mother are buried. Doing this is a Filipino custom called Undas (the 1st is also called day of the dead) – family members visit the grave of loved ones and are supposed to remain at the grave for the entire day, socialising and saying prayers. We usually start at midnight on the 31st and stay until the morning of the 1st, as the memorial park is crowded with thousands of people on the actual day. We also have candles burning all night – so that’s why I drew this the next day.

Yesterday we went for a walk and then sketched in the square in Lavenham sitting on the benches. To the left is a cobblestone wall with a plaque dedicated to the 487 Bomb Group. In the background are some tea rooms.

Yesterday we made a visit to Manila Memorial Park and I took the opportunity to sketch. The buildings in the background are actually tombs.

Today I was lucky enough to have some free time to go out and see some sights and sketch. This is where the remains of Ho Chi Minh are kept – apparently against his wishes. The sketch came out ok, but without a scanner I couldn’t get a very good copy of it.

Here is another one from the sketchwalk I joined on Saturday. This is a memorial to Andres Bonifacio, I think depicting various events in his life. I was told the different flags show how the current Philippines flag evolved. The KKK on one flag refers to the Katipunan a Philippine revolutionary society founded by anti-Spanish Filipinos in 1892.

Here is a tree I sketched at memorial park on Sunday when my wife and I made a short visit to the graves of her parents. I was thinking I’d add more detail at home, but decided to keep it simple. My ink brush dripped onto the picture as well…but I think that helped.
