My wife baked me a coffee walnut cake for my birthday – yummy! This is the last slice…after doing this sketch I ate it! Of course I have sketched cake many times before…and coffee walnut is a regular…see sketch No.2640 and 2008.

We finally said a sad goodbye to our 25 year old bread-maker and our new replacement (a Baumann) arrived on the day before my birthday (a present from my sister and mum). Of course I had to use it straight away and it worked brilliantly – it didn’t jump about on the worktop, there was no need to jam spoons in it (see sketch No.116-3417) and the bread came out perfectly!

I’ve been making kimchi to give as a small Christmas gift – despite making eight jars I had to make make another batch in order to give one to each family in our extended family…including siblings (in-law) and married (or partnered-up) nieces and nephews.

As I sketched this I was listening to Ajahn Brahm talk about the “Happiness Industry: Joy at Last” – his point being that the looking for it stops you getting happiness. He said the joy is giving up looking – and achieving peace at last. This sketch is of some Lumpiang Togue which is a type of deep fried spring roll, but instead of meat, Mung bean sprouts are used as the major ingredient.

To start me off with this sketch I looked up the Usk global sketch prompt which was “liquid”, so I thought of a bottle…and then an empty bottle of blueberry Piitik Wine that we had finished the day before (Piitik Wine is an establishment in Sagada renowned for it’s locally produced wine). It was not bad actually – a little fizzy and sweet but drinkable – made in the Philippines in Sagada Mountain Province according to the label. For a change I drew it from above.

In my sketch No.97-2915 I sketched one of the many things I love about the Philippines (banana cue) – here is another example. This is Karioka – a popular street food – made from glutinous rice balls, deep fried and coated in a caramel glaze. I bought these at the wet market near our house. They are crunchy outside and chewy inside. Yummy. I sketched this while Strange New Worlds played in the background and followed it by watching the movie “Together”

These are some left over eggplant and almond enchiladas (which were doused in the hot sauce in the bowl next to them). They look and taste a lot better than they appear in my sketch!

Our regular seller at the local market often gives us a few freebies (maybe things they have too many of or that are likely to go off soon) – this time it was some chillies! I wanted to get them looking brighter and shinier in my sketch …next time I’ll do better.

Yet another evening sketch – this time of some pasalubong that we bought in Canada for family members. I had to be restrained from eating these. I also struggle with depicting shiny bags like this in sketches – another reason why this subject is not for me.
