109-3262 – Ripening papaya

I’ve sketched a papaya many times – though never the inside I suppose – but with a big “red lady” (that’s the type of papaya) like this one, I do like the patterns that form as it ripens. Very soon after this sketch it was all yellow outside and a delicious pinky-red inside.

2105 – King of fruits

The first time I experienced durian was when I lived in Cambodia and my neighbour gave me a section as a gift. I put it in the fridge but when I came home from work, I thought it had gone off and threw it away. I only realised later it was supposed to smell like that! That was 30 years ago. Now I can’t get enough of durian – there is something euphoric about eating it and it’s my favourite fruit.

2085 – Special treat

Last week my wife made some delicious mini-quiches for dinner (filled with egg yolks, tomato and mozzarella) which we had with home-made chips/french fries. The special treat (apart from the delicious meal) was that I didn’t have to do any of the cooking!

1636 – Quiche

There is nothing quite as nice as a vegetable quiche served with chips! This recipe (with a wholemeal cheese crust and tomatoes, carrots and peas) came from my mum’s scrapbook of recipes…this one was from a a magazine article, probably from the 1970’s! Still tasted great though.

1624 – More gifts

My sister-in-law bought us loads of lovely goodies for Christmas, including these figs which are disappearing rapidly. I do like getting consumables and food for Christmas – much better than getting some plastic gadget that never gets used.

1605 – Christmas dinner

Here is sketch from a few days before Christmas – and we ate this yesterday, roasted along with coriander seeds, garlic and cauliflower. Frankly I don’t know why some people hate broccoli – I love it….but then I also like brussel-sprouts.
