99-2976 – Lunar new year, black doves, black sea

This is the first sketch in another sketchbook made using 300gsm Baohong Hot Pressed paper. The first of these tall thin sketches was done at J.Co donuts (I always thought they were a Filipino company but it seems they are Indonesian). We went out to the mall firstly for me to post my passport to the UK and secondly to buy some stuff to prepare to join the Luneta Art Fair. The second sketch is the only tall and thin thing I could think of to sketch the following day, which I did while we watched the TV.

98-2971 – Latte art in a mug

I was thinking of my daughter when I sketched this as she is doing a barista training course and was practicing her latte art when she was visiting us. They day I sketched this I was in Greenbelt 3 to pick up my replacement iPad which had failed for no reason (but which Apple replaced free of charge). After hiking around the malls for a while looking for a sports shop to buy a new bike pump I sat at Starbucks for a quick snack and coffee. I follow some people (like @caobecky) who do lovely sketches of their food and coffee…but I don’t know how they manage it as I can’t wait to tuck in…the food would get cold to start with. Anyway I did manage to sketch my coffee – and did this one fast enough that the coffee was still hot by the time I finished! I always ask for the coffee in a mug…this should be the default option if you are eating in, to avoid dreadful waste.

98-2965 – Mood: Coffee – More espresso less depresso

On Wednesday 15 Jan I took our daughter into Quezon City so she could get a tattoo done (her Christmas present from us). I found a cafe to wait in (called Mood Coffee – @mood.coffeeph) and sketched this. They had very nice coffee and the owners were very friendly and kindly filmed me sketching and posted it on instagram! Unfortunately my sketch didn’t capture all the text of their catch phrase painted on the wall…but the title of this does!

98-2963 – Give in to the perfect pair

After our #SketchWalk on Sunday 12th, my wife and daughter went to get a massage while I did some shopping. After that we met up for dinner at Wabi Sabi (one of my favourite restaurants) in Makati Central Square (I still think of it as Makati Cinema Square, but I guess there are no cinemas there and the mall looks a little run down these days). While I waited to meet them I had a coffee and a doughnut at “Dunkin” – rebranded from Dunkin Donuts. According to their website they rebranded to “emphasise their beverage offerings, particularly coffee”…trying to compete with Starbucks I guess…personally I think it was a bit pointless.

93-2842 – Coffee sketch Sunday

This sketch was done on the BGC (Bonifacio Global City) high-street, after we had done our weekly shop at Market Market! (the nearest big shopping mall to us)…boy was it crowded in the supermarket. After shopping we went for wander to find a place to have a coffee and do a sketch. I actually had a green tea smoothie – mostly sugar and not much tea I think – but yummy!

93-2839 – Start the day well

About a week ago I decided to start my day (very late) with a sketch of our new coffee cups (always a therapeutic exercise)…while drinking my coffee. These were made (and given to us) by my friend @col_creates …along with two lovely little bowls (I’ll add sketching those, to my prompt list). With great care these mugs made it, without breakage, all the way from Edinburgh to Manila, in my hand luggage.

93-2836 – Going to Venice again

Taguig City (where we live) is definitely not a walkable green city by any stretch of the imagination. The day I sketched this we wanted to go for a nice walk in a park…but it seems there are no parks at all in the city. We ended up driving to the McKinley Hill area, only to find that “McKinley Park” is actually a tiny leftover strip of land – a road reservation. Nevertheless we had a wander around the area and eventually went into Venice Grand Canal Mall for a coffee at Cibo (how you pronounce that I don’t know), where I sketched this view out of the window.

91-2788 – Coffee at Laxfield

On 24 July we had another morning of trying to sort out our hire car, followed by a nice relaxing walk in the “Old School Wood” and along the footpaths going towards Little Waldingfield. The Old School Wood is a community woodland bought and planted in 2008 and managed by a group of volunteers. After this we visited my mum again for a chat and a cup of coffee, when I did this sketch (featuring a bit of wonky perspective!).

90-2778 – Established before I was born

Here is a quick little sketch I did when we visited SM Aura shopping mall to buy #Pasalubong to take to the UK on our upcoming holiday. Buying pasalubong is the Filipino tradition of travellers bringing gifts from their destination to people back home (so we are kind of doing that in reverse). We had a snack and coffee at the #CoffeeBeanAndTeaLeaf having failed to find a single speck of vegetarian food at the food court, even though they have recently refurbished it (grumble, grumble).
