The garden of the place we stayed in Lobo had several Buddha statues and lots of greenery – perfect for sketching. I realised later that all the statues are the same – I was just seeing them from different angles. In all of them Buddha appears to be meditating – something I’ve never really tried, but wish I could do.

Today I painted a collection of table decor in our common clubhouse – the Buddha head is cast metal, the green wooden stand had a candle at the top (cut off in the drawing) and the orchids were plastic! I used my current favourite technique – water soluble ink lines first, then watercolour painting (which blends with the ink and loosens the hard lines), then touches of watercolour pencil, soluble graphite pencil and black ink wash to finish off.
