95-2878 – Jar with the immortals

Here is the last sketch I did with #UskManila at the #AyalaMuseum Amplify Arts & Music Festival. This one was done in the lobby, in the area behind the devotional altar. In my sketch you can see a Kinabiggat (a king post from an Ifugao house) and the end of a Kulintangan (a gong and drum ensemble from the Sulu and Mindanao islands). In the foreground is the 16th century “Jar with the immortals” – from Jingdezhen, in Jiangxi province in China. These are the Eight Immortals—Daoist symbols of longevity and happiness….not just some immortals but ‘the’ immortals.

95-2876-7 – Textiles

Bagobo magani

After sketching the dioramas at the #AyalaMuseum, I went up to the exhibition called ‘Skeins of Knowledge, Threads of Wisdom‘, which displays traditional textiles from the Mercedes Zobel Collection. My first sketch is of a Bagobo warrior (Magani) with a dance spear and shield (the Bagobo are a tribe from Mindanao).

Loincloth, woven hat, gong

The second sketch is a mannequin dressed in Itneg textiles carrying a brass gong and wearing an Abag (loincloth) and Salakot/Kattukong (woven hat). The Itneg are an indigenous peoples from northwestern Luzon. I was sketching these in semi-darkness (I assume they keep it that way to preserve the colours of the fabrics)…so I didn’t know what the colours would turn out like!

Pottery making 6,000 years ago

Here are the sketches I did for the #SketchExchange with #UskManila at the Amplify Arts & Music Festival. On the second floor of the #AyalaMuseum they have more than 60 of dioramas, presenting the story of the Filipino people starting in 750,000 BC up to the US recognising Philippine Independence in 1946.

The first mass 1521

I just did two quick sketches, one of pottery making 6,000 years ago and one of the first mass in 1521. I put these sketches on our groups table and took one in exchange (the third drawing in this post), of me doing my sketch in the lobby area. I’m not sure who did this one…but to whoever claims it as theirs, thank you very much, great drawing!

94-2854 – Family take out

I forgot to post this sketch which was done at the Gyud Food Market at UP (University of the Philippines), last month. We were at UP to visit #StickerCon where we bought some stickers ….of course! Afterwards we went for a snack and a chat with friends at the food market (we bought our dinner from the shop in the background – yummy pad Thai).

95-2873 – Ayala Museum: In microcosm

Here is the first sketch I did with #UskManila at the Amplify Arts & Music Festival, marking the #AyalaMuseum 50th anniversary. The festival celebrated Filipino creativity with live performances, lectures and the museum’s collection of exhibits. Our group had some live sketching going on – plus there was a sketch exchange. I decided to do this first sketch before the crowds filled the lobby area. This display includes several objects from different parts of the Philippines. In my sketch you can see an 18th Century “Retablo Altar” (a devotional altar), from Leyte Province, in front of which is a 19th century Nuestra Señora del Rosario (our lady of the rosary). In the glass case in the foreground is Nuestra Señora Inmacuada (our lady of immaculate conception).

95-2867-9 – Museo el Deposito

Underground reservoir

Here are the sketches I did with #UskQuezonCity at our #SketchWalk at the Museo el Deposito in San Juan. The museum tells the story of the Carriedo water works with the underground reservoir (designed by Spanish engineer Genaro Palacios) originally being fed by the Marikina River and serving fountains and hydrants in Manila. The underground chamber was also used as an armoury during American and Japanese rule. My first sketch was done in the underground reservoir area.

Next door is the Museo ng Katipunan (Museum of the Katipunan) which honors the revolutionary society called the Katipunan with a permanent exhibition. In front are some life-sized figures (some of which I sketched), commemorating those who fought in the Battle of San Juan del Monte (the first major battle of the Philippine Revolution).

My last sketch was of the Museum itself with what I think is the San Juan city hall in the background (the circular sign is the official seal of the city).

95-2866 – What we did on Saturday

Here are a couple of half-page sketches of our day last Saturday. The first was done at Manila Doctors Hospital (where we went to pick up our annual health checkup results). After my first consultation it was raining heavily so we had some lunch in Café France. The second sketch is of the last samosa of the bag full we bought from @assadminimart along UN Avenue, after the rain stopped. We also bought a load of spices, dried pulses and dried fruit. It’s a fantastic shop for all that kind of thing (they have a branch in Makati and Pasig)…and the samosas are heavenly!

94-2659-60 – National Museum of Natural History and Manila Doctors

Here are two sketches I did while waiting for procedures during our annual health check up at Manila Doctors Hospital. The building in my first sketch (viewed from the window of the hospital) was initially built as the Agriculture and Commerce Building in 1940 (it was designed by Filipino Architect Antonio Toledo in the late 1930s). American forces bombed the building in 1945 and it was reconstructed in 1949. It was then repurposed from the Department of Tourism to a museum in 2013.

The second sketch was done during the inevitable endless hanging around in waiting areas – and was done at two different times in two different waiting areas, hence the skewed perspective.

94-2853 – APEC sculpture garden

Here is the second sketch I did with #UskManila when I joined a #Sketchwalk at PICC. After having sketched the main building I thought I’d do some quick sketches of the sculpture garden that is in front (that was opened in 1996). I did the ink work on the spot and added the colour at home. I’ve sketched here before (see the Russian Bear from last year – No.2472). These ones are (from the top left): Singapore (Harmony by Sun Yu-Li); New Zealand (Untitled Growth Pattern by Szirmay Marté); Thailand (Growth by Vasun Harimao); and Australia (Trade Winds by Allan Geiger, Giovanna Ianniello and Gerard Murphy).
