81-2546 – Mary with her back to the pool

On Christmas Day we had a family get together at a resort called Sa Kamay Ni Maria Resthouse, Los Banos, Laguna. There are so many of us now (partners, more children, extended family), that there isn’t enough space for us all to gather in one of our houses/apartments, so a nearby resort with lots of space and a pool (heated by natural springs) seemed like the best solution. I loved the resort as it had so many quirky and unusual figurines, statues and objects hanging on the walls…it was hard to know where to start sketching, I could have sketched for days!

81-2545 – New boots

This is my first sketch in a new sketchbook – number 81. For a change it’s not one that I made myself, but one that I won at the raffle with #UskQuezonCity at the sketchbook binding workshop that I did earlier in December. It’s a square format Zen Sangam Watercolor Art Journal with 25 sheets of Cold Pressed 250 GSM paper and was kindly donated to the raffle by a fellow sketcher Ever Villacruz (@pamatayhomesick). These hiking boots are my daughters Christmas gift to my wife.

80-2544 – Taxing time

Here is a sketch I did while waiting to pay our property tax (RPT) at the new Taguig City Hall. I thought I would have to be really fast with this one (and rushed the sketch), as last time I paid our tax, it was very efficient…not so this time. I even had time to go out to Starbucks to get a coffee (for an hour) part way through, without my queue number being called.

80-2543 – Shaka cafe

Here is a quick sketch I did while we waited for our dinner at Shaka Cafe in Burgos Circle, BGC, last week. We were there celebrating the 22nd birthday of our youngest daughter, and had a delicious vegetarian meal. It’s just a coincidence that the plant at the top of the sketch looks like a sunflower…the round things are actually light fittings.

80-2542 – Medical center

Sketching patients during a quick visit to the medical center for a cough that won’t go away (not me but my wife). Both airports and clinics are good places to sketch people. When sketching people I have to remind myself to accept errors (and just make a correction) and keep the pen moving and roaming around the paper.

80-2541 – Sweet

Here is another sketch following the #Sketchtober2023 prompts – this one for Day 26. I bought these little tins of cookies for our daughters advent calendar presents (yes we are mad enough to buy little gifts for advent…much easier when they were little girls). I bought these (from #KulturaFilipino) not so much for the cookies, but for the tins in the shape of jeepneys. Happy Christmas to everyone who follows me, likes my posts, enjoys sketching and celebrates this time of year!

80-2539 – Audio equipment

I am all out of order with posting my sketches. Plus I am still doing sketches following the from #Sketchtober2023! Anyway here is one following the prompt of “Audio equipment” for Day 30. These are my daughters headphones – Anker brand I think.

80-2540 – Pink to scan

I have recently bought a new scanner, because our old one packed up. After a bit of research I decided to buy a photo-scanner made by Epson. It uses a slightly different technology than most flatbed scanners (CCD instead of CIS, supposedly to give a colour scan a greater depth of field) the upshot of which is that I can now make a better digital copy of any sketch I do that uses pink! Before I’ve had to fiddle about and tweak the image on the computer. I decided to sketch these slippers of my daughter particularly to test out the scanner.

80-2534 – Spotlight on tree

Here is another Christmas sketch – this one done at the mall, when I did a day-long mammoth session of Christmas advent calendar present shopping. Mid-way I had to give my tired feet (and wallet) a rest and did this sketch in the SM Aura shopping mall. I added the colour at home… as well as all the little twinkling lights done with a Posca pen.
