82-2584 – Quick sketching at CCP

82-2584 – Quick sketching at CCP

Last weekend I joined #UskManila at Pasinaya 2024. According to one website this is the country’s largest multi-arts festival, “with over a hundred shows, screenings, workshops and other activities in music, theatre, dance, visual arts, film and literature”. We were one of the first events and after a little introduction about Urban Sketching some of us did little sketching demonstrations with groups of interested participants. I chose this view of the Cultural Centre of the Philippines national theatre building, and tried to share some ideas on how to sketch scenes like this quickly with the group, as I sketched. I hope they got something out of it.

82-2583 – 45 minute wait

This sketch was done outside the Market Market! mall while I waited for some sketches to be printed. I was hoping to use the prints in the #UskQuezonCity 5 year anniversary exhibition (on at the Presidential Car Museum until March 18), but the quality wasn’t good enough. In the end I put up original sketches. At least my trip to the mall wasn’t completely wasted, as I drew this.

82-2582 – Another one bites the dust

Another piece of our kitchen equipment has packed up – this time a hand blender. The motor seems to have given up, so it looks like we will have to replace it. It’s served us well for a good few years, so it deserved a goodbye sketch. They don’t seem to make things to last these days.

82-2581 – Little frog

After a day of #UrbanSketching on Saturday last week, I decided to sketch something simple on Sunday evening. This little green frog was given to my wife by my daughters partner. It’s legs and arms bend…and I think it’s supposed to sit in a position like it’s meditating.

82-2580 – Arroceros Forest Park

For my last sketch with #UskManila last Saturday, I should have really sketched the “forest” (my fellow sketchers did some brilliant sketches of the trees and undergrowth). Instead I picked the signboard…I am not sure why…maybe because it was what I saw in front of me when I sat on a bench.

82-2578 – M L Quezon bridge

Here is the first sketch I did with #UskManila at the Arroceros Urban Forest Park last Saturday. The park is described in Wikipedia as Manila’s last lung, being the city’s only nature park. It’s also right next to Pasig river so I decided to sketch this bridge, which was built in 1939 and is supposedly inspired by the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This sketch took me quite a long time and started to get really complicated when I tried to draw in the arches in the background.

82-2577 – Brushes

Here is another sketch of a Christmas gift I received. I asked specifically for a new back-scrubbing brush. The grey handled brush in this sketch is ancient and has lost most of it’s bristles, the other (with the circular head) is already falling apart, as the bristles are set in a piece of plastic that is nailed to the wooden handle. I drew this using a dip pen and some mystery ink I found in my art kit…obviously the ink is not permanent as I thought it was.

82-2576 – Balikbayan gifts

Here is another sketch of Christmas gifts – this time of some of the things my sister-in-law so kindly sent for us in her #BalibayanBox. As I said in my post from 7 Feb last year (post 70-2301), when I sketched the same subject, Balikbayan box literally means repatriate box. Each year we get lots of goodies from Canada – dried fruits, tins of mixed beans and things we can’t easily buy here.

82-2575 – Eagle boots

These are the colourful wellington boots that my daughter bought to wear while she did a couple of weeks volunteer work at the #PhillipineEagleFoundation in January. The PEF has been working since 1987 and is “dedicated to saving the endangered Philippine Eagle and its rainforest habitat”. There are only 392 pairs of Philippine Eagles surviving – it’s a critically endangered species, endemic to the Philippines (and is the national bird of the Philippines). You can support the PEF at their website (https://www.philippineeaglefoundation.org/).
